Overview
A BMD test aids in the diagnosis, treatment and management of osteoporosis. It is important to get a BMD test done as soon as it is prescribed by your doctor. A BMD test measures the amount of calcium and other minerals present in your bone which will determine your likelihood of developing osteoporosis and assess the relative risk of future osteoporotic fractures. According to Osteoporosis Canada, over 2.3 millions Canadians are living with osteoporosis. At least 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 5 men will suffer from an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime.
How does it work?
BMD testing uses x-ray technology to measure your bone mass. You will be required to lie flat on an imaging table while the machine passes slowly over your body for a scan.
Preparation Required
- DO NOT take any calcium, vitamin D nor dairy products on the day of the exam.
